that's okay, I just found out that my parents have netflix. that scares me. my dad actually gets on the computer to look for movies. he doesn't know how to turn the damn thing on, but can browse netflix for movies after someone turns it on and connects it to the internet for him.
Nice! My dad's one of those "computers are the ruination of mankind" sort of people, yet he stands behind my mother while she's on it and has her look for movies for him. He's kind of funny like that. ;)
my dad is the same way, but everyone got sick of him standing behind them to find movies, so my step mom told him he had to do it for himself from now on. :)
Howl's Moving Castle is indeed a good movie. Not Ghibli's best, but definately in the top 5. I think an important question is: Have you seen some(all) of Ghibli's other films, and which ones did you like (if any)? Howl's is much closer to Porco Rosso than, say Nausicaa or Mononoke-hime.
The Howl's movie, be aware, is not very close to the book at all. So if you go into it expecting that, you will be disappointed.
Ah ok. I remember watching Princess Mononoke a long time ago and from what I remember, I liked it. I just watched Spirited Away within the past couple of weeks and enjoyed it quite a bit. I admit I didn't really research this movie before I made my post. ;) I just added this one to my queue.
Personally, I only found Mononoke-hime ok (for a Ghibli film), and really didn't like/couldn't get int to Spirited Away. Maybe it was just that I wasn't very well/awake at the time, and that I only saw the first half or so.
In my opinion, Howl's is better than both Mononoke-hime and Spirited Away, but then, my top 3 Ghibli films are Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Whispers of the Heart.
Which I believe makes me somewhat of a heretic. 0 =)
I strongly recommend all three of them. Porco Rosso is a fine rollicking story about air-pirates, whilst at the same time being about self-forgiveness.
Kiki's is a coming-of-age story, with some lovely visuals and a whimsical bent.
Whispers of the Heart is a more sedate, serious look at a coming of age/growing of romance story. Might re-watch it tonight, actually, it's been years (8? 10!?) since I saw it last.
And of course, being Ghibli films, the music in all of them is wonderful.
For reference, the director, Hayao Miyazaki won the 2003 Acadamy Award for Best Animated Feature for "Spirited Away". Howl's Moving Castle was nominated (but didn't win) in 2005.
I actually did want to put my name down (with a link to my own site of course ;)) but it doesn't seem like I can do that unless I have an actual LiveJournal account. What the heck?
It's not really an age thing, man. It's just that it's my parents. It's just weird to me. Not the sort of thing I'd expect from them... As far as I'm concerned, you're never too old for anime (or video games)!
If they have no fondness for fantasy or science fiction whatsoever, then I'd suspect it was the advertisements. It really is a good movie, for what it is. I wish Miyazaki had tried to make the movie of the book, rather than the movie inspired by the book with just enough of what was in the book to make it interesting.
There's a sequel to the book as well... I'm not sure but I suspect he may have lifted from that. I'd have to unearth the library to be sure, though, and I'm not close to that yet.
